Aloo tikki - indian street food potato cakes










potato cakes 

500 g potatoes peeled and parboiled whole then shredded

1/2 cup bread crumbs or farofa

1/2 cup onions - chopped

1/4 cup cilantro - chopped 

1 tsp salt 

1 tsp chaat masala 

1/2 tsp cumin 

1/2 tsp dried red chili powder - used cayenne pepper


Par boil the potatoes whole, ready to shred when you can just get the tines of a fork to enter the potato but the potato still is semi-firm. 


mix all together and smooch together to mix thoroughly. 

once mixed, roll desired size.

take a small portion of the potato mixture in between your palms. 

Roll it gently and then flatten it using your fingers.

heat oil in a pan and brown on both sides,

serve hot and with the preferred sauce.


sauce suggestions 

- plain yogurt,

- tangy-sweet tamarind chutney,

- spicy, green chili-laced green chutney like cilantro or mint chutney, 

- mild tomato chutney
